Welcome to Frogwood Arboretum (est. 2007) which is located on 40 hectares, 100 acres, of land in the quiet country town of Deans Marsh. Deans Marsh is situated in the foothills of the Otway Ranges in South West Victoria, Australia. As of 2021 approximately 95% of the Arboretum planting has been completed.
Previously a cattle property, Frogwood is now being transformed into an Arboretum containing some of the most remarkable tree species on the planet. What make a tree species remarkable is of course open to debate. However for the Frogwood Arboretum a remarkable tree species is one which is widely recognised as being exceptional in one or more of the following categories; Usefulness to humanity, natural beauty, individuality and or a spiritual/symbolic connection to a particular culture.
One of the main features of the Arboretum is that each tree species represented in the Arboretum has been planted in a grove containing only trees of that particular species. When complete the Arboretum will contain over 3,000 trees selected from approximately 200 different tree species. Planting the trees in groves, rather than as individual specimens, helps showcase the trees in a more natural setting while at the same time helping create a more genetically diverse seed bank for future generations.
Where possible the trees planted in the Arboretum are Original species i.e. not cultivars. Alsowhere possible the trees have been grown from seed rather than grafted.
